Ida Hiršenfelder: Intermedia Workshop: Listening to the Unhearable
The workshop will be divided into four sections.
In the introductory section, we will learn about the characteristics of electromagnetism and the frequency spectrum of sound in order to understand the difference between two very different physical phenomena, both measured in hertz, and to explore the effects of electromagnetic frequencies on biological organisms. Following the introduction, we will assemble simple coils for converting electromagnetic signals into the audible sound spectrum.
In the second part of the workshop, we will test new probes (sensors) and learn field recording techniques, with a focus on understanding the difference between input level and signal amplification. We will listen closely to the different rhythms, pulsations, timbres, densities, and textures of electromagnetic smog in the immediate environment.
In the third part, we will prepare the recordings for composition. We will be introduced to spatial composition techniques (discrete and ambisonic) in the Reaper digital audio workstation, which is freely available for educational purposes, and explore the basics of wave-based spatialization. We will use the recorded samples to compose a short electroacoustic piece.
Finally, we will set up wheatgrass (Triticum aestivum) growing cultures, which can serve as a standard genetic model for laboratory studies investigating the effects of electromagnetic radiation on plant organisms.
